About Rachelle Mahapatra
I qualified as a Solicitor in 1993 specialising in medical negligence litigation.
I have acted for hundreds of former patients who have been injured during medical treatment. I act for babies who suffer a brain injury at birth, either because of a delay in their delivery or failure to recognise complications such as placental abruption, infection, maternal complications, such as very raised blood pressure and hypoglycaemias due to poor feeding. In addition, I act for babies who have complications in the neonatal period, such as undiagnosed encephalitis, meningitis and feeding difficulties.
I have acted for patients who have suffered all types of complications of surgery, such as damaged bile ducts during gall bladder surgery, missed damage during elective surgery, such as to the bowel or bladder and missed diagnosis such as appendicitis.
I act for families in the antenatal period where something is missed in screening or on a scan. In 2005 I was appointed to represent the families in the Kerr Haslam government ordered inquiry, following sexual abuse of patients by two doctors. After the inquiry we settled over 50 damages claims for the patients.
I am a Law Society Medical Negligence Panel Member, a referral Solicitor for the Charity Action Against Medical Accidents and a Fellow of APIL. I won Yorkshire Partner of the Year in the Yorkshire Lawyer awards 2016.
