Simon Ellis is a key partner with Hugh James, leading the firm’s military department, which is one of the largest such teams in the UK.
Simon specialises in advising current and former members of the armed forces suffering with various conditions, with particular emphasis on hearing loss and cold injuries. Simon regularly has work referred to him from other firms, counsel and military organisations due to his expertise in this field and has secured six figure settlements in cases turned down by other firms as too complex. His case of Inglis v MoD won the 2019 Eclipse Proclaim Outstanding Case of the Year award.
He regularly contributes articles for the press relating to military legal issues and has given interviews on radio and television. Simon has also written articles and drafted a number of precedent documents for Lexis Nexis and is one of their panel contributors for industrial disease. Simon is regularly asked to give training to solicitors and barristers in the industrial disease work he undertakes.
Due to his experience and reputation Simon is often asked to consider more unusual types of industrial disease. He has been at the forefront of seeking justice for clients suffering with less common illnesses, caused through the work they carried out.
Simon is an accredited senior litigator with APIL and holds the APIL Military Specialist Accreditation. He authored the chapter on Military Claims in the Butterworths PI Update Service. He is named as a Leading Individual in the Legal 500 2021, where he is noted for handling “complex and difficult military claims.”
