About Ian Bailey
Ian is undoubtedly one of the country’s leading practitioners in asbestos law. Acting solely for Claimants, he leads the London asbestos team. Trained at Irwin Mitchell and qualifying in 1994 (partner 2001), Ian has spent his career helping to recover compensation for the seriously ill or those who have suffered life changing injuries at work.
Ian has been part of the firm’s workplace injury executive for more than 15 years and was elected Secretary of the Occupational Health group of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) in 2018.
Since 1996 Ian has pursued cases for victims of asbestos diseases. He has worked on behalf of clients from overseas (mainly Australia and New Zealand) who contracted asbestos diseases before emigrating to other countries. He regularly receives instructions from law firms outside the UK. As part of the civil claims, his London team has now recovered more than £400,000 for local hospices adding significant value to both clients’ cases and their communities
Ian acted for the Claimant in the Court of Appeal case of Cox v Transco (a leading case on asbestos exposure by an occupier and inferences to be drawn from primary facts) and in the case of Gardner v Royal & Sun Alliance, an important case in terms of insurance cover.
Respected by contacts in the medical profession for his work, Ian and his team have been at the forefront of the evolving law to ensure that clients have access to potentially life-prolonging treatments such as immunotherapy for mesothelioma, and developing legal agreements to guarantee long term payments for victims without limit on cost and likely duration.
